You’re layer is completely filled. Meaning there is no transparency around the shape. You need to select the white area of that layer and delete it.

I love your tutorials!!, you are my favorite from the photoshop guys, I want to ask youa favor… I think I accidentally threw away an issue of layers magazine with one of your tutorials, the tutorial was a movie poster effect also that had a silhouette of a girl and beams of light in the back so she looked all black with the splendor, you wrote “american pop star” as a title, I hope you can re create it here so that I can have it back…
