I have a photo that has only a gray channel. I want to colorize
this photo but so far no matter what I choose the color defaults
to gray. Is there a way around this?
Thanks

Hello,

First you have a grayscale image and you want to colorize it. To do that you need to convert your image to RGB and this can be done by going to IMAGE>MODE>RGB. Now difference is that in CHANNELS palette you have red, green and blue channel, but image is still in grayscale but RGB mode allows you to colorize it. And to do that you'll need to in LAYERS palette create new layer and set it's blend mode to COLOR. And after that choose Brush tool (letter B keyboard shortcut) and choose color you want and simply paint on that new layer. To achieve better results play with a brush tool opacity or choose different type of brushes, you have them as presets which ships with Photoshop. This is easiest way to colorize grayscale image.
