White Background

This is such a basic question but I'm having trouble remembering. I took an EPS image off the web and into Photoshop. From there a did an ellipse marquee because I needed only a portion of it. When I place it in Illustrator it has a white background. How do I get just the image no background color?

You opened or placed EPS picture in Illustrator?
EPS (encapsulated post script) format is supported by Illustrator you can open it, you don't need to place it.
