On that tutorial above the past where it talks about the gradiant i am confused...how do you get it painted by using the gradiant. I hit Q than i hit gradiant tool, than i click and drag, than it disapeers and i am lost.. please help me!
I don't see anything you're doing wrong. I did what you said you did and it worked for me ...
But just to check, I hit Q then gradient, and dragged it across the screen.

Ok, let's begin by saying that a Quick Mask is really a SELECTION!. So, when you enter the Quick Mask Mode (by pressing Q on the keyboard) what you are doing is making a selection. Now, if you make a gradient in the Quick Mask mode and then enter the Normal Mode (again, Q) your selection may be not visible, BUT IS THERE!
Try working on Layer mask to understand how this works.

Hello,
Just remember white reveals and black conceals and shades between white and black (grey) regulates your "translucency".
