There are a few different formats to save your logo in. First of all there is JPG which doesnt work with transparency at all, so lets forget about that. If you save it as a gif you can get transparency, but it will probably not be the smoothest around the edges. For example if you have a black background you will clearly be able to see a small white, pixelated edge around your logo (atleast if you have round or uneven edge surfaces, it might work if your logo is just a square with totally even edges or something). But atleast it works in both Firefox and IE.

Then you can save it as a png-24. This will make it transparent with perfect edges, but from what i can see it only works in Firefow, in IE you still get the white box (how stupid is that!).

I dont really know what kind of logo you have or what kind of background you want to put it on, but if you have a simple one-color background on your site i would just recommend you to make a new layer, fill it with the same color as your background color and then move it to the back of your logo picture. The best way with dealing with backgrounds is just to make the background of the logo the same as the background you want to put it on, on your site. Transparency is just a tricky thing when it comes to compability and i wouldnt really trust it.

Hope it helps..

PNG is one of the solution, but why dont try to edit your logo using Photoshop. Try magic wand tool to remove any background pixel and keep whatever image logo in front. The key is adjusting the tolerance number and then use eraser tool. Good luck

I found that the best way is with a gif, however you have to make sure that you erase the edges completly. I had exactly the same problem the other day when i was making a new skin for my forums.

This was the image i had to remove the white dots from:

and this is how it looks on my forums.

just make sure you go around the edges properly with the eraser on 100% opacity.
