I feel like an idiot not knowing or being able to find out how to do this. I need to know how to fade the edges of an image out to a color, such as white. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

in the image either using the Rectangular marquee or the Elliptical marquee. Once you have the selection Click on Select>inverse. Once the selection boundaries (marching ants) are around the outside of the image. Click on
Select>Feather and set a value for the feathered edge, a small value makes a more abrupt edge, where as a large value makes a softer more transparent transition edge.

Once you get the feather click on Edit>Fill and fill the selection with white

And that should do it John

FYI, here's a step by step tutorial for creating soft edges in Photoshop (http://www.graphicreporter.com/tutorials/photoshop_softedges.html) :)

I'd use the feather too but I'd cut away from the edge and leave it transparent then put the colour on another layer below it. Just incase you decide on a different colour later.
