Help getting this effect!?

I'm kind of new to PS, im using 8.0. Click here (http://gangstagrillz.com/myspace/dedication2_bg.gif) to see the effect that i'm shooting for. So far I've tried changing the image to a greyscale first. Then using the spong effect followed by filling in some of the areas with white and black. I can get something similar but not as fine detail. Is it a lot of brush and touching up work to get it like that or what else should I try?

first convert your image to grayscale then, apply Image>Adjustment>Threshold. Move the slider until you get the effect you want and click Ok. To add contrast to the borders, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Finally, open Image>Adjustments>Levels and move the black and white sliders to the center.
A better way to acomplish this effect is using Illustrator CS2: just import your image into a new document in Illustrator and on the top bar select Live trace!
