I would like to duplicate the techniques used in a photo, but have no idea how to go about it. I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me. A copy of the photo is at

Simon,
The image is nice, I agree. To start, you should have 2 pictures, but I guess you already knew that... It would be very nice if the background image already had the strong shadow parts in it as you see on the picture. If not, you could try to create them yourself, but that wonīt be an easy job...
Import that background image in a new document with a black background. First desaturate the image (ctrl/cmnd + U) and press ok. Hit ctrl/cmnd + U again and give it the greenish color you see on it (check the fill with color box). Lower the layer opacity and perhaps you should erase some parts you donīt want to see (donīt erase the original image! Always work in a layer copy!).
The second image isnīt all that special. Just drag it into your new document and erase the background of it!
Good luck!

Thanks for that Euroscale
I should be able to reproduce the background picture on my camera by using very strong lighting from the right and slightly to the rear in a very dark room/studio, It was the desaturation and colour casting that I am unsure about. I will try your technique, and if I have any luck, I will post my results at a later date.
