I have looked around on the internet, but have never found a truely good tutorial to show you how to take a picture of a real person, and turn it into a cartoon charecter.

I decided to figure it out myself and I came up with this...

1. First you want to get a picture of a person agenst a relativly basic background (no paintings or anything with thousands of colors). My picture isn't so good but it works.

2. Then you copy the layer and call it edges.
Make sure that it is selected and go to Filter >> Stylize >> Find Edges.

Your image should then look like this:

With that layer still selected, set the blending mode for the layer to multiply.
This is when the image begins to look like a cartoon.

you should now have this:

3. Now we merge the layers by making sure that the top layer (edges) is selected an going to Layer >> Merge down.
Now you should have one layer and the image should look the same as the previous one.

4. Now for the final step.

We apply a surface blur by going to Filter >> blur >> surface blur

use these settings:

radius= 3 pixels
threshold= 12 pixels

Note: you can fool with the surface blur and come up with your own settings

your final image:

HAVE FUN!

thanks for the tutorial. its very hard to cartoon an image.
takes several much more steps. and its basically dealing with vectoring.

here's an easy no brainer one for ya to try also.

open the image.
go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Give it 5.
go to Edit>Fade Gaussian Blur and change the blending mode to Darken.
Duplicate the layer and set it to screen to brighten it up.
