Hello everyone. I'm new to the community and new to CS4. I have a question about the format drop down when trying to save as in Photoshop. After resizing a nef file then trying to save as a jpeg for emailing the format does not include jpeg. I'm on a MacBook Pro. Thanks for any help.

When you want to email a file use Save For Web & Devices. This will give you the option to re-size, just adjust the width & height in the right hand menu box.'IMAGE SIZE'
Before you re-size the document, save as a PSD. then when you know its saved Flatten the document and 'Save As' a Jpg so you have a copy of your work.

Well most definite reason that you can't save in JPEG is because you are opening RAW file which is Nikon NEF file and those files are high bit depth files. I guess your Camera Raw is set when you do processing in it to open RAW file as 16 bit file. And with 16bit file trouble starts when you want to save as JPEG. JPEG are not designed to be saved as 16bit. That only can be done with JPEG 2000.
Solution:
Before you want to save your file as JPEG go to IMAGE>MODE>8Bits/Channel and after that save as JPEG.
Other solution i wouldn't recommend but you can set your Camera Raw preferences when you finish processing your file to open it as 8bit. I am not recommending this since working in 16Bit mode is "non destructive" and when you need 8Bit functions you can always to reduce it down.
Cheers ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I hope I'm not making this harder than it really is and the save for web and devices worked really well but I seem to remember that I was given the option in the format pull down window under File>"save as" starting with Photoshop format and 8 or 9 other formats, that I'm not familiar with, up to and including tiff. Wasn't jpeg one of these options. A friend of mine that has CS4 only on a PC says he has jpeg as an option. Thanks again. I really appreciate the help in getting me up and running.

As Nemesis says, not all the formats are available in 16bit and some of the other menus will be grayed out when you want to use them.
Understanding these things will take experience and practice, but we have all been there so just keep practicing and it will all fall into place. Frustrating though isn't it :D
Just have fun.
