I am a skinner for a Sims 2 fansite, and I create clothing textures using Photoshop CS2. I used to use Photoshop 7.0, and always loved the results I would get with the tools I utilized the most, (blend, smudge, dodge and burn, etc.) Since I started work on a dress with a patternless skirt, I have been noticing that the blended areas of my textures do not appear soft, as they did in my old version. The transition from a light area to a shadowed one looks very pixellated and harsh, even when I use the smudge and blend tools. In my old version, I never changed the settings of the brushes or anything, so they should have been at default, as they are with this new version. This problem makes it impossible for anything to look softly blended (unless it is patterened) which is an absolute must for the work that I do. I have lost about four weeks of work due to this, and am very nervous that If I dont do something quickly, I could be in trouble. I never fiddled with any of the settings, so I dont understand why everything looks different. My monitor is the same as the one I was using before, and I can't think of anything that would be causing this other than some hardware setting. I have spent countless hours looking through them, and not findng anything that made any difference.

Just for reference, I am viewing the same texture any time I try new options. Then when I change the options, I use the smudge tool to see if the resuts are different.

Five months ago, I got a new video card, and three months ago, I upgraded the rest of the computer. About a month ago, I upgraded to CS2. I have been on other forums in search of help, as well as seeking help from other people that do the work that I do, and can't find a way to assist me. Most of the advice I recieved had to do with the pixels per inch, or the settings of my video card, none of which seemed to make a difference with my old version, (7.0) on my old computer. I am inclined to think it must have something to do with this computer in particular, because I have viewed the same texture on other computers, and it has been fine, once I used the smudge or blend tool to correct it.

I am honestly at my wits end, I dont understand why this would be happening, and havent a clue how to fix it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone out there can help me with this. I would be grateful beyond words. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

How are you coming with this? Honestly, the only Photoshop forum I know of that might be of help isn't free. I don't supposed you're a NAPP member? They have a 24/7 free help desk on their member website, http://www.photoshopuser.com.

Let me know where you're at, and I'll see if one of my buddies at a big art studio can help tomorrow when he gets into work. Also, do I understand you correctly when you say that it looks fine on other monitors? It's just your monitor that everything looks differently on?

Well, I have been on at least 8 other photoshop forums to ask for help with this issue. I have still not been able to find a solution.

As for the monitor, no. When I transfer the file to another computer, it still looks bad, but it can be corrected with the blur, smudge tools. It can't be corrected on this computer. I have opened up files that I had long before I statrted having this problem and they are affected as well. Its almost as if the file has actually changed. Its truly bizzare. If you do have someone that you think may be able to help, I would be grateful beyond words.

Thank you so much.

to the friend I was telling you about. Hopefully he'll know of something to try. I'll let you know asap.

My friend is betting the house that it's your image interpolation, but he has some other suggestions too, which are in his own words in order of priority below:

1. Press Command + K (PC: Ctrl + K) to bring up Photoshop preferences, and under General, make sure Image Interpolation is set to Bicubic.

2. Next thing to check, and this might be too obvious but I have to ask... check your document working resolution (under Image/image size). Be sure it's 72dpi for screen based work. Less then 72 dpi would explain problems. You might have set the default lower*without noticing and whenver you make a new*document from that point on, Photoshop holds that screen resolution setting from that point on.

3. Next thing to check, and this seems to cause quirky problems from time to time... be sure your cache levels are not set too high. I have 4gbs of ram and I keep it at 6. That setting is also in preferences, under Memory & Image Cache.

4. Last ditch effort and going for a longshot, delete your Photoshop preferences. Do a search for:*com.adobe.Photoshop.plist

and delete it, BUT before you start Photoshop again, repair your permissions with Apple disk*utility, if you're on a Mac, that is.

Let us know if any of that helps! Thanks to Marcus Conge of Digital Manipulation (http://www.digitalmanipulation.com/) for the ideas.

Oh, gosh...

Thank you so much for getting in touch with your friend. Its wonderful to know that people are still willing to lend a hand to a stranger. I wish I had better results with Marcus' suggestions, though. :(

I checked the interpolation, and it is set to bicubic.

My resolution is set to 72dpi.

My cache level is the same as yours, set at 6.

And as far as the preferences, I dont think I have any. I know I havent set any since I installed CS2. I still tried looking for them. ( I did the search, and found nothing) I just poked around until I found a "preferences" folder. But there was nothing inside.

I hope that doesnt mean all my options are exhausted...I'm not sure what I would do.

It makes perfect sense to think its just my color settings, or monitor, or video card, and I suppose there is a chance it still may be one of those things. But I can't help thinking that the files have actually changed somehow. If I send the whole file to a fellow texture artist, they see the same thing I do. If it were all about the "lenses" I am viewing this through, ("lenses" being my color settings or monitor, or something) then shouldnt it look fine to everyone else?

Heh... I'm just glad Marcus had some suggestions because I sure didn't!

Marcus suggests that you have Photoshop mimic your previous color settings (command shift K - on the mac) if you know what those were or use the emulate Photoshop 4 setting. Then remake a simple pattern to see if it's different from your previous pattern.
