I'm trying to duplicate an athletic look on a font where the image has a "worn" look and parts missing. any ideas?

You might try this:

Step 1. Apply a layer mask to the text layer by clicking the circle within a square icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette.

Step 2: Select the Brush tool and from the options toolbar at the top of your screen, load a chalk or spatter-type brush (or something equally "distressed").

Step 3: With the layer mask thumbnail selected in your layers palette (you'll see a hairline rule around it), press X until black is the topmost color chip in your Toolbox.

Step 4: Mouse over to the document and click/drag on the text bits to produce the look you're after. If you hide too much (in the realm of layer masks, painting with black hides and white reveals), just press X to swap color chips so that white is on top, and paint those areas back in.
