Vanishing Point error

Hi, I am using cs3 on a mac. Suddenly the vanishing point filter is not working. I get an error message when I try to select the vanishing point filter that the operation could not be completed. I tried the vanishing point filter on two different PSD files and both times I got the same message so the error is not specific to any one file. I then reset photoshops preferences by holding down the option, command and shift keys when launching it, but am still getting the same error message when I try to open the filter to use on both files.

I then opened a file that I had used the vanishing filter on in cs2. When I chose the vanishing point filter, the filter opened after a message that "saved planes have been updated to the current version of photoshop. Converted planes cannot be opened with previous versions once they have been saved." I clicked ok and was able to make changes to the image that had originally been created in cs2 with the vanishing point filter.

What is causing this problem and what can I do? Thanks.

Upon further investigation it appears that the problem I am having with the vanishing point filter is specific to those files as I am unable to run the filter on them when I open them on another mac computer. The filter appears to work on all other files on both machines. Is there any way to uncorrupt the files so that I can continue to work on them? It seems like I can use all other tools on them and that the vanishing point filter is the only thing effected. Previously the filter worked ok on these files. Thanks.

I have fixed the problem by copying and pasting all the layers of the corrupted document to a new document. The vanishing point filter now works on the copied and pasted file. Kind of weird that it won't work in the original.

That is a weird problem indeed! Glad copying/pasting the layers into a new document fixed it though. Great to know :)

I believe the vanishing point filter somehow remembers an error in a file once you do something in it that the vanishing point filter doesn't like. (I had already run the filter on the two effected files several times before.) Using the save as command and changing the names of the files didn't correct the problem. It was only when I copied and pasted the layers of the files to new files that the problem was fixed. I think i this is is another CS3 photoshop bug. I found on the Adobe Labs forum that other users were having the same issue.

If you are saving you files back to Windows Server 2003 there is a known compatability problem with CS3 on Leopard and corrupting files as they save to the server. It is best practice to save locally and backup to the server. You can work around the problem by using the 'save as' instead of save.
