I am attempting to do a christmas card and would like to make the picture black and white with just a touch of color (ex: my daughter b&w with her santa hat red)
I just got my photoshop 4.0 and I am sooo lost but time is running out...
Anybody willing to give me step by step instructions???
TIA!!!!!

Just press ctrl+u to bring up hue and saturation, then drag the saturation slider down untill you get just the right amount of color you want. ;)
BTW, you should really get a more recent version of PS. 7.0 at least.
Hmmm, are there adjustment layers in Photoshop 4? I just can't remember. If so, create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and pull the saturation slider all the way to the left to zap the color. And since adjustment layers come with a layer mask, you can use that to hide the effects of the adjustment layer you just created. Here's how:
Select the layer mask thumbnail in the layers palette
Choose the Brush tool
Make your top color chip black
Paint the hat area
You should see the red come back in, that is, if your version of Photoshop supports adjustment layers.
