Need some help.

Whenever I try to put a graphic into Word (specifically, anytime I'm putting a graphic onto a colored box of text), there is a white background behind the image, even when I select "Transparent" for the background in Photoshop.

Does it have something to do with how I'm saving the image? I usually save as either.jpg or .tif. What should I do instead?

Many thanks!

Yes, it has to do with the format you save it in. You can save your image as a transparent .gif or a .png. To save a .gif go to 'file' > 'save for web' and check the box that says "preserve transparency".
