Editing Background

This may seem lame, but I liked the effect and wondered if anyone knew how to do it..

I was watching America's Next Top Model, and saw them shooting on the beach. When the photos were revealed, it was obvious the background (the sand, sky, ocean) had been edited making it look more nighttime instead of the afternoon/day time like it was. Does anyone know how to edit your background in a photo like this? Please le me know. Where are examples of the photos I am talking about:
