Hello Nick,
I suggest you instead of using variations to use Hue/Saturation. Duplicate layer of the image and than go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation. In Hue/Saturation dialog box from drop down menu choose red and click on red color than adjust your Hue slider to change the color. Mask portions of the image on which you don't want to apply Hue/Saturation. And by the way texture of the plastic will be retained. Most of your work can be done with Hue/Saturation, cloning, brushing...
Your request is not the type of quick tip, only i can gave you a little bit of insight how to that if you are a little familiar with Photoshop.
If you have further questions, post them.
See ya

Hello Nick,
When you are in Hue/Saturation dialog box from the drop down list choose REDS (because you want to change those reds) and play with HUE slider (with HUE slider you are adjusting the color or in plain English you are recoloring your targeted colors) and when you find color you like with hue slider, than go to SATURATION slider (SATURATION Slider is pretty self-explanatory :D ). So when you are satisfied press ok. Than mask the areas of the image you don't want to affect with Hue/Saturation. I don't have to remind you that you have to do this on your duplicate layer, we resolved that in previous post :D .
See ya and enjoy :D
Ohh, yes if any questions.... :D
