OK, I have several layers that I am not ready to merge into one layer, but would like to create a mask that acts on all the layers at once. How do I do this? I don't want to have to make separate masks for each layer. Thanks for your help.

Hello again
In Layers palette open new SET (Photoshop CS) or GROUP(Photoshop CS2, CS3) and put those layers in it. Than apply mask on that SET or GROUP and if you know concept of masking, mask that Set or Group and that will apply mask to all layers in it.
TIP: If you use CS2 or CS3 select multiple layers with Command clicking (MAC) CTRL clicking (PC), and when you are selected all layers you want press COMMAND + G (MAC) or CTRL + G (PC) and that will open in Layers palette new group with your layers previously selected and it will be named generically Group 1.
See ya
