2010: The Year We Make Awesome!!!

Well can you believe we have made it to 2010? So how many of you really believed we would be in flying cars and eating meals in pill form. I did, well at least the flying car part. Anyway it’s been a remarkable journey so far and I am anticipating a whole new level of awesome in this new year. We have a number of new surprises planned in the coming months and while I cannot reveal any details now, just know it’s going to be big!!

In the meantime, RC and I started recording new episodes of Layers TV last week so be looking for the first episode of the new season to be posted on January 6 (Wednesday). We are super excited as we have changed the look and format of the show and have all kinds of great new content coming your way. Find out more here. Also the request lines are open!! Meaning if you have a question, comment, or just want to share a cool story click the Contact link at the top of the page. While I am excited to bring you all the cool techniques I can come up with I want to know what you would like to see. Some of you have been trying to ask me questions through the comment section but going through the Contact page will be much easier. If I like what you suggest and make a tutorial from it there just might be a cool prize in it for you. Well that’s it for now.

Hi, I am 53 and a self taught Photoshop user. Can we have a tutorial about what works design wise? Being older, I am finding that I can’t seem to shake off traditional design elements. I want my work to look more modern but am struggling with what works and what doesn’t! When I view other works from professionals I can be either in awe of them or downright confused!
    Any tips please?
    Thanks Dora

Create A Composite Layer

If you have a multilayer composition and you
want to apply an effect to all the layers at once, don’t flatten the layers–use a composite layer instead. Hide the layers you want excluded, and press Shift-Command-Option-E (PC: Shift-Ctrl-Alt-E). A new layer will be created at the top containing a merged copy of all the visible layers.

Another option is to create a new layer at the top of the stack and make it active. Command-click (PC: Ctrl-click) each layer you want to include to make those layers active, as well. Press Option-Command-E (PC: Alt-Ctrl-E).
